5 Unique Ways Drones are Being Used Today

Drones are becoming part of our day-to-day life with people inventing new ways of using them. Days when only the military and government agencies had access to drones and when drones were used only for warfare are behind us.

Civilian drones are now a multi-billion dollar industry and are now available to anyone; from the streets of Manhattan to the rural villages in India. With the rise in popularity, the use of drones has become quite diverse with many developing unique uses for them. Here are 5 unique ways drones are being used:

Wildlife Protection

Poaching has been a thorn in the flesh for many countries with governments unable to fight it in real-time. This has been largely due to the huge tracts of land that most game parks occupy making it impossible to monitor manually.

Drones have transformed this sector and have given authorities the ability to monitor the game parks in real-time. The cost has also been reduced greatly as most of these drones are usually on auto-pilot and save a lot of manpower which can be applied in analysis and response. The Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya, the biggest sanctuary of the endangered black rhino, is a great example. They are using drones to cut down on poachers who hunt the rhinos.

Archaeological Discovery

The applications of drones in the archaeology sector is relatively new. Heat-detecting sensors are attached to drones, which then fly over large areas of land and can detect changes in heat patterns indicating the possibility of artifacts and fossils. This technology was applied in Mexico leading to the discovery of artifacts that were over 1,000 years old.

Fighting Crime

Deep down we all hope that one day Batman will start fighting crime in our neighborhoods, but until then, drones are helping do this. The police and other crime-fighting authorities are using drones to prevent, combat and solve crimes. Drones are used for surveillance in neighborhoods and when any suspicious activity is spotted, the required manpower is deployed in real time

Drones are not limited to fighting the petty crimes only. Big crimes like terrorism are also being prevented through the use of drones to monitor areas that are prone to attacks like airports and embassies. Manual monitoring of these areas is tedious and not as effective. But drones fixed with cameras, are being used to surveillance areas.

Flying Waiters

‘Yo Sushi’, a UK restaurant, is pioneering the use of drones to wait on customers in its restaurants. These drones are controlled through a Wi-Fi connection and an application on an iPad. Numerous videos posted by both the restaurant and the very excited customers show the drones delivering trays of food to customers!

The drone delivers the food to the customers without a hitch and returns to the counter where it awaits more orders.  What’s even better is that at this restaurant, the drone waiters don’t require you to leave a tip! This is not the first time food is being delivered by drones. Domino’s Pizza has already started testing pizza deliveries with drones. I’m sure there will be many more restaurants that will use drones to deliver food.

Amazing Aerial Photography

Drones have been adopted in the aerial photography industry at a very fast rate. They are able to capture very clear aerial photographs and compared to methods previously used, they are extremely affordable. This widespread use of drone videos in the photography industry has led to the capturing of some amazing shots that were never seen before. From marine shots involving dolphins, whales and more to other wild animals in their natural habitat, drones are giving us perspectives of the world around us in a way we’ve never seen before.

These are just a few of the unique ways drones are changing the world. Moving forward, we can expect to see more unique ways drones are integrated into our day-to-day life.
